Pathway Week 3: Measuring Ravensbourne

Measuring Ravensbourne

Images of our space within the building:

We, as a group, chose this space because it had a fair bit of space about it, it wasn't too complicated and because the space itself was completely unused by staff and students.

The first and most important task of taking measurements went really well. Our group were very determined to do well so we worked together really well. Our measurements were accurate, often times repeating our measurements to test our accuracy. We spent a good hour or so recording measurements from different aspects of the space.

Plan Drawing

Our first accurate plan drawing was done with a 1:25 scale. This allowed us to realise a model that would be a decent enough size to work with. We were encouraged to choose either a scale out of 1:25/50/100. This was to keep things consistent across the class and it just seems to keep everything a lot easier in terms of the math.

Elevation Drawings

The elevation drawings took more time to create than I had anticipated, purely because the level of accuracy is far greater with these. In a plan drawing its simply just one shape you have to record and create, the floor. With these it was every single panel/wall that the space has. Even despite the length of time it took me to create them I am very happy with the result. They are simple, clear and, most importantly, accurate.

Model

Making the model was the real test of how accurate our measurements were. It hurts to say that mine were a little off, the measurements weren't off but my drawing skills were a little off on the day I was making and so I messed up the shape of the base for the model. My base was inaccurate yet my walls were fine. It won't work if not everything is accurate. In order to salvage my model I had to improvise and reduce the size of the walls so that it would fit the base. It wasn't the biggest mistake but it reaped a whole lot of consequences. It was so stressful trying to get it to work that it definitely taught me the importance of accuracy and focus.

Design

My first proposal for a piece of furniture inside my space. The seat offers students a place to sit down because even despite the building being a very open space it is often very difficult to find somewhere to sit down with your friends. It is contemporary and can be useful in an environment like Ravensbourne.

The addition of record players in the barren space will add an element of entertainment.

The old-school style of the record players will give the building something new and exciting to play with. Ravensbourne has always taken pride in having the latest tech and equipment at hand so my way of counteracting that is to have something old and dated, though still relatively in fashion. It will appeal to people as art students seem to be very fond of analogue technology and anything 'vintage'.
